The Beatles' chart-topping singles compilation 1 led 2000, anchoring a year split between Britpop's afterglow and a new pop-soul wave. Coldplay's Parachutes, Travis's The Man Who and David Gray's slow-burning White Ladder carried the introspective guitar mood, while Madonna's Music and Moby's Play pushed dance forward. The surprises sit at the edges: Enya's hushed A Day Without Rain and the Cuban veterans of Buena Vista Social Club both landed among the pop heavyweights, and Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP brought hard rap into the mix. With Robbie Williams' Sing When You're Winning and Eminem flanking gentler fare, 2000 caught British taste mid-transition from lad-rock swagger to coffee-table melancholy.
