Duffy's Rockferry led 2008, fronting a year when retro-soul and homegrown pop ruled. Take That's reunion record The Circus, Kings of Leon's breakthrough Only by the Night and Coldplay's Viva La Vida pushed big names up the chart, while Adele's debut 19 quietly arrived. The surprises span genres: the Mamma Mia! film soundtrack and the classical-vocal trio The Priests both charting high, plus Fleet Foxes' acclaimed debut among the pop. Disney's High School Musical 3 kept the franchise selling, and Elbow's Mercury-winning The Seldom Seen Kid earned its place. Between Duffy's Welsh soul and Adele's first steps, 2008 was thick with British talent finding its feet.
