Mamma Mia! The Movie topped the chart, but the year's real story is told by the title right behind it: The Dark Knight, which charts on standard DVD at two and, tellingly, on Blu-ray at 15, the format's first real foothold here. Family and animation hold strong with Kung Fu Panda and WALL-E. The pattern is HBO's prestige drama arriving in force, with The Wire appearing across four separate seasons. The surprises are the awards-season foreign and indie titles, No Country for Old Men, The Lives of Others and La Vie en Rose, charting among blockbusters. A year when high-definition discs first crept onto a list still ruled by DVD.
