Now That's What I Call Music 95 led 2016, but the year was shadowed by loss. David Bowie's Blackstar, released days before his death, charted at number three with the vinyl edition reappearing lower down, while Elvis's orchestral The Wonder Of You and Leonard Cohen's farewell You Want It Darker also marked passings. The Rolling Stones' blues covers Blue & Lonesome and the Best Of Bowie compilation deepened the catalogue presence. Beyoncé's Lemonade and Bruno Mars's 24K Magic kept contemporary pop strong. With Bowie, Cohen and Prince all memorialised across the list, 2016 was a year defined as much by who the music world lost as by what it released.
