2020 was the year UK music buyers reached for the familiar. Bruce Springsteen's Letter to You took the top spot, but the more telling story is underneath it: decades-old catalogue albums sold like new releases, with Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, Harry Styles' Fine Line and a Greatest Hits collection all charting on vinyl. With shops shut and time abundant, locked-down adults were rebuilding the record collections of their youth. Classical crossover surged too — the London Symphony's Classic Diamonds, the Kanneh-Masons' Carnival and Andrea Bocelli's Believe all landed high — while Taylor Swift's folklore, Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia and Kylie's DISCO carried the year for new pop. A chart shaped less by what was new than by what was comforting.
